On November 29, Postal workers from the CUPW Vancouver Executive Committee occupied Liberal MP Terry Beech’s office in Burnaby BC demanding health and prescription benefits for Postal Workers be reinstated. CUPW members were angered at the situation of fellow CUPW member, Marc Caron, whose family must now spend $2K per day for cancer medication after his medical benefits were terminated by Canada Post.
On the first day of the postal worker strike two weeks ago, Canada Post said it will no longer respect the terms and conditions of the CUPW collective agreement, effectively ending all health and prescription benefits.
Caron and his wife are left feeling helpless. In a recent interview Manon Gignac said: "This is very difficult for us because we know that my husband, his life is in danger."
Occupying Postal Workers were arrested but released. Their occupation is a sign that union members are getting fed up with Canada Post’s violations of their collective agreement and bargaining rights while on a legal strike.
